Christopher Kane’s debut collection for Mulberry Spring 2027 focused on minimalism, sharp tailoring and the British brand’s signature leather craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive pockets and flaps of iconic Mulberry bags, including the Bayswater and Piccadilly, Kane translated familiar accessories into a wardrobe defined by clean lines and geometric details.

Leather dresses and skirts appeared in a restrained palette of taupe, cream, caramel and chocolate. Car-wash pleats added movement, while curved shoulder cutouts brought a sculptural quality to dresses. Minidresses featured layered leather flaps resembling abstract ruffles, and boxy coats incorporated square cutout details across the front.

The same architectural approach extended to knitwear, which echoed the collection’s precise shapes and layered flaps. Eveningwear featured smaller, note-like pieces made from a lightweight Japanese nylon fabric that Kane has used in previous work. Scattered across shift dresses, the details lent the looks a futuristic, Space Age sensibility.

The collection’s most relaxed pieces were oversized Mulberry sweatshirts, which recalled the designer’s personal memories of the brand. Kane connected them to the football-casual culture he grew up around, describing how working-class young people wore crisp white jeans with Mulberry shirts.

“Those football casuals were always part of my culture. It’s how I knew Mulberry growing up,” he said.

While the collection offered attractive individual pieces, its restrained aesthetic raised questions about its relevance to the current fashion climate. At a time when fashion is increasingly embracing color, embellishment and exuberance, the emphasis on quiet luxury and minimalism felt somewhat out of step.

Some of the leather designs also appeared overly rigid, particularly embossed crocodile-effect dresses with wide sailor collars. Their structured construction seemed at odds with contemporary preferences for comfort and fluidity. Even the bags and backpacks maintained the same hard-edged, architectural quality.

Ultimately, Kane’s debut delivered a clear vision rooted in Mulberry’s leather heritage, but the collection sometimes prioritized runway impact over everyday wearability. The challenge will be translating its strong visual identity into pieces that feel as practical as they are striking.
