Labrum London continued its exploration of cultural exchange and identity with its Spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection, marking the third installment in designer Foday Dumbuya’s ongoing creative investigation into the concept of osmosis.
Rather than treating the scientific process as a literal reference, Dumbuya uses osmosis as a metaphor for intercultural exchange and the ways migration and the movement of people have shaped contemporary British culture.
The previous two collections approached the subject through more specific themes, first examining music and then textile production. For Spring 2027, Dumbuya presented what he described as the concluding chapter of the trilogy, aiming to bring the broader ideas together.
“It’s the final part of a trilogy,” Dumbuya said during a preview, suggesting a sense of completion for the project.
Building on a Defining Creative Theme
The collection followed a period of growing recognition for Labrum London. Dumbuya’s previous show, staged in an Edwardian hall decorated with painted ceilings and traditional portraits, was widely regarded as his strongest collection to date.
That reception was reinforced when he subsequently won the British Fashion Council and GQ Designer Fashion Fund, further raising the profile of the London-based label.
For Spring 2027, Dumbuya returned to the same venue, retaining its historic surroundings as a backdrop for his exploration of culture, heritage and identity.
However, the decision to revisit the setting and continue the same conceptual thread also created high expectations for the new collection. While the designer intended to deliver a broader, more comprehensive conclusion to his trilogy, the presentation left some observers wanting a more satisfying resolution to the ideas developed across the three seasons.
Fashion as a Reflection of Britain’s Cultural Fabric
At the heart of Dumbuya’s work is the belief that contemporary British identity has been shaped by the interaction of different cultures, communities and traditions.
Through Labrum London, he examines how these influences overlap and evolve, using fashion to explore the relationship between personal heritage and collective identity.
The trilogy’s progression from music to textile production and finally to a wider consideration of cultural exchange reflects the designer’s sustained interest in the forces that shape society and creative expression.
Spring 2027 brought that investigation toward its intended conclusion, positioning the collection as a synthesis of the ideas explored in previous seasons.
Continuing Labrum London’s Evolution
Dumbuya’s latest collection arrived at an important moment for the label, following the acclaim surrounding its previous presentation and the recognition provided by the BFC/GQ Designer Fashion Fund.
Although the Spring 2027 show did not fully satisfy expectations for a definitive conclusion to the trilogy, it continued to reinforce the conceptual foundations of Labrum London.
By consistently returning to cultural exchange, migration and the evolution of British identity, Dumbuya has established a recognizable narrative at the center of his work. The next challenge will be to build on that foundation while finding new ways to translate the label’s ideas into compelling collections.
