Jason Wu returned to the runway after a year and a half’s break. His return Collection for Spring/Summer 2020 was that of evening looks. It was appealing, poetic and romantic to say the least. The Brooklyn Bridge could be seen from the Pier 17 post-industrial studio and on the inside, there was the dim lighting and just the right amount of hints of bushes and flowers. Nature and Romance. The ambiance was set alright!

“It’s about beauty. I have never been edgy and cool. I don’t know how to do it. I want to do my best version of beauty.”

The palette picked was very soft and subtle:  light greens, warm-toned pinks, mesh nudes, black and white. What was new here was that all the fabrics for the pieces were hand-washed.  It gave Wu’s piece a crinkly quality and also some three-dimensionality. He played with different materials, raw-cut edges and textures throughout his collection. The silhouettes were clean and precise. He also used a lot of ruffling textures to give the dresses a variety of necklines. When it came to designing, the designer took inspiration from his photographer friend Maxime Poiblanc’s images of fragile and dried flowers. He printed these flowers on a couple of pieces like a pencil skirt with matching bralette, some dresses, and gown and on a pair of pants again with a coordinated bralette.

He ended the collection with tulle gowns with tiny ruffles which gave a very simplistic vibe but were absolutely gorgeous. There was a sense of free flow in all Jason Wu’s pieces this season. You do not need the utmost important “red carpet” sort of event to pick a piece from this collection. We found it very wearable for any occasion which one feels is close to oneself.
