Rachel Comey marked the 25th anniversary of her label with a Spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection inspired by the life and work of Rosalyn Drexler, the late American artist, playwright, novelist, and professional wrestler. Presented at New York’s historic Judson Theatre on September 9, 2026, the collection embraced individuality, artistic expression, and unconventional styling.
Rather than focusing on the milestone itself, Comey used Drexler’s multifaceted career and distinctive personality as the collection’s creative foundation. Models carried copies of the artist’s books, including The Cosmopolitan Girl, while archival materials from her years at the Judson Theatre appeared across tops and skirts. The collection’s vibrant colors also reflected Drexler’s artistic palette.
Comey’s designs have long appealed to women who want clothing that feels distinctive rather than simply flattering or fashionable. For Spring 2027, she continued that approach with combinations that balanced everyday wearability and artistic eccentricity.
Polo-knit tops appeared alongside running shorts, while layered separates and polka-dot wraparound miniskirts introduced playful proportions. Chenille tank dresses worn over lace camisoles added texture, and the collection favored unexpected combinations over conventional matching sets.
Even the more coordinated looks retained Comey’s experimental touch. A matching jacket and trousers appeared near the end of the show, styled with a shirt featuring long strands of sequin fringe trapped between layers of tulle. The detail reinforced the collection’s emphasis on unusual textures and thoughtful construction.
Despite its artistic references, the collection was designed to remain practical. Graphic, doodle-covered T-shirts and a shirt-and-shorts combination decorated with stud-like embellishments offered pieces that could easily become part of an everyday wardrobe. The latter detail nodded to Drexler’s experience as a professional wrestler, where she performed under the name Rosa Carlo.
Drexler, who died in 2025 at the age of 98, was known for moving freely between artistic disciplines. Her unconventional life and creative independence made her a fitting inspiration for Comey, whose designs similarly resist strict fashion categories.
The collection also coincided with the opening of Rosalyn Drexler—My Life Has a Life of Its Own, an exhibition at Garth Greenan Gallery celebrating the artist’s work.
With her Spring 2027 collection, Comey demonstrated how fashion can draw from art and personal history without becoming overly formal or inaccessible. The result was a playful, character-driven wardrobe that celebrated individuality through expressive details, unusual combinations, and pieces designed to be worn beyond the runway.
