Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin sees simplicity as a defining feature of the future. For Spring 2027, the Pierre Cardin designer and CEO explored how comfort, elegance, and technological innovation could shape the way people dress, presenting the collection at a Paris ice rink. Models circled the venue while skaters performed impressive spins, bringing the collection’s blend of sportswear and refined style into focus.
Comfort was a central consideration for Basilicati-Cardin, who believes athletic-inspired clothing can be both practical and elegant. His approach was informed by work with the European Space Agency (ESA), where he contributed ideas to the development of suits designed for astronauts training for future lunar missions. Some of the technical solutions explored through that collaboration have since been adapted for everyday clothing.
The designer described his suits as exceptionally slim and close to the body. He also imagines a future in which individuals could wear personalised garments equipped with miniature internal pumps to regulate temperature, keeping the wearer cool in summer and warm in winter.
The collection continued Pierre Cardin’s long-standing fascination with the Space Age, a legacy established by Basilicati-Cardin’s celebrated uncle. Fitted bodysuits featured striking geometric embellishments in bright colours, while jackets took on boxier shapes. Mini skirts and dresses appeared in unconventional silhouettes. One mint-green look, accented with periwinkle, combined a cape formed from two circular panels with matching trousers featuring distinctive zippered pockets.
Material choices reflected the collection’s forward-looking philosophy. Basilicati-Cardin uses recyclable fabrics and, when suitable new materials are unavailable, draws from a stockpile of deadstock textiles his uncle began collecting around 60 years ago. The designer values these fabrics for their originality, noting that many were considered highly modern when they were first acquired. Rather than allowing them to go unused, he sees an opportunity to give them a new purpose.
With its mix of space-age references, technical experimentation, wearable comfort, and considered use of materials, Pierre Cardin’s Spring 2027 collection looked ahead while remaining firmly rooted in the house’s futuristic design heritage.
