Elena Velez turned global conflict, political division and questions of morality into a provocative runway statement for Spring 2027. Titled SMITE, the collection examined the relationship between violence, power and righteousness, challenging conventional distinctions between good and evil through a darkly theatrical blend of historical references, distressed textures and experimental silhouettes.

Rather than drawing inspiration from traditional seasonal themes, Velez used fashion to reflect the tensions shaping contemporary society. Her show notes explored the idea of aggression justified through a supposed higher authority, questioning who becomes the victim and who assumes the role of perpetrator. The collection also addressed militant tribalism, ideological conflict and humanity’s enduring capacity for violence.

For Velez, the creative process begins with interpreting the emotional atmosphere of a particular moment and translating it into visual language. Her Spring 2027 designs reflected what she described as a world defined by extreme polarization, expressed through the tension between delicacy and aggression.

The result was a collection that combined dark glamour with an intentionally ambiguous political perspective, reinforcing the designer’s reputation for using fashion to provoke discussion rather than offer straightforward answers.

Political Symbolism Meets Distressed Textures and Historical References

The runway presentation took place in the lobby of a former bank building in New York’s Financial District, where moving spotlights heightened the atmosphere of uncertainty and confrontation. Velez incorporated familiar elements of her design vocabulary, including undone corsetry, industrial workwear marked by stains, historically influenced draped skirts and jackets, and subtle steampunk references.

This season, however, she moved away from the glossy, wet-look finishes associated with some of her previous work. Instead, garments featured brittle, dry surfaces resembling cracked plaster or layers of caked-on material. These textures gave the collection a weathered, almost damaged appearance that reinforced its themes of conflict and instability.

Softness offered a counterpoint to the harsher elements. A long ruched skirt and a frilled blouse finished with a pink bow introduced a more delicate dimension, while torn stockings, knee pads and headpieces blending Middle Eastern and medieval influences added further layers of visual complexity.

Velez also incorporated political and cultural references through her casting. CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou walked the runway carrying a book about Watergate, an appearance that resonated with contemporary concerns about government credibility, political secrecy and the rapid circulation of conspiracy theories online.

At the opposite end of the presentation, climbers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, known for scaling the Empire State Building as part of a daring proposal, closed the show. These contrasting figures contributed to the collection’s broader exploration of conflicting identities, competing narratives and the uncertain boundary between heroism and transgression.

Menswear Expands the Designer’s Exploration of Masculinity

Spring 2027 also marked Velez’s formal introduction of menswear, allowing her to examine masculinity through the same contradictions that informed the womenswear collection.

The offering ranged from imposing silhouettes featuring exaggerated quarterback-style shoulder pads to flowing cream-colored looks with an almost angelic quality. The contrast highlighted the tension between strength and vulnerability, authority and softness, and aggression and restraint.

Velez described masculinity as an area surrounded by combustible energy, making it a natural extension of the collection’s wider concerns. Rather than prescribing a single interpretation, she used contrasting shapes and styling choices to leave room for multiple readings.

That ambiguity has become central to the designer’s creative identity. Velez frequently incorporates unexpected cultural references and subtle details, which she describes as “easter eggs,” while resisting definitive explanations of their meaning. Her interest lies in the antiheroine and the gray areas between opposing forces, where conventional labels become less reliable.

With SMITE, Velez continued to challenge the boundaries between fashion, art and political commentary. The collection’s distressed materials, dramatic silhouettes and symbolic casting created a deliberately unsettling vision of contemporary life.

At a time when public discourse often demands clear divisions between opposing sides, Velez’s Spring 2027 collection invited audiences to consider the uncomfortable spaces in between. Its strength lay not in delivering easy conclusions, but in using fashion’s visual power to question the narratives through which people understand morality, conflict and authority.
