After an incredible 16-year journey, 14 of those as creative director, Olivier Rousteing is officially leaving Balmain, marking the end of a defining era for the French luxury house.

Rousteing, who became Balmain’s creative director in 2011 at just 24 years old, made history as the first Black designer to lead a major French luxury brand. Announcing his departure on Instagram, he reflected:

“I arrived at 24 with my eyes wide open and the determination to persevere. Today, I leave the House of Balmain with my eyes still wide open—open to the future and to the beautiful adventures ahead.”

Earlier this year, Rousteing received the 2025 Couture Council Award for Artistry, where he reflected on how his role evolved from a “quiet apprentice” to a bold creative leader. “When I was 26, I became myself—breaking boundaries and not being scared to take risks,” he told ELLE. As he matured, his focus turned toward honouring the heritage of the house, studying the archives of its founder, Monsieur Pierre Balmain.

Throughout his tenure, Rousteing reshaped Balmain into a global cultural force. He pioneered the Balmain Army, embraced celebrity influence long before it became industry standard, and created memorable fashion moments, from Tyla’s sand-sculpted Met Gala gown to striking red carpet looks worn by Rihanna, who once inspired him to “break all the rules.”

In recent years, Rousteing’s designs have evolved toward a more refined, craft-centered aesthetic, reflecting his own growth and creative maturity as he enters his 40s.

Balmain confirmed his exit on social media, expressing gratitude for his vision and leadership, and noting that a “new creative organisation” will be announced soon.

Rousteing ended his farewell message with heartfelt words:

“What an extraordinary story it has been—a love story, a life story. None of it would ever have been possible without my chosen family, my team, and all the people who believed in me from the very beginning.”

His departure closes a groundbreaking chapter for Balmain, one defined by innovation, inclusivity, and the fearless fusion of couture and culture.
