American fashion designer Nicole Miller marked her 45th business anniversary with a Spring 2027 collection that celebrated New York City, playful prints and some of the most distinctive designs from her archives.

The presentation took place Wednesday in the Piano Room at Hotel Chelsea, bringing together celebrities and fashion industry figures, including “Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell, Nicky Hilton, stylist Erin Walsh and several “Real Housewives” personalities.

Bushnell, whose iconic character Carrie Bradshaw helped define New York fashion culture, praised Miller’s ability to design dresses that reflect the city’s social scene.

“Nicole really nailed the dress for women because that was the life she led: she was always out in New York,” Bushnell said.

A Love Letter to New York

Miller described the presentation as a tribute to the city where her business began in 1982. The collection revisited signature elements from her archive, reworking them for a contemporary audience.

“I just really liked the sense of humor in a lot of my clothes, so I brought back those ideas,” the designer said, explaining that she had previously experimented with more serious and expensive-looking styles.

Dresses dominated the presentation, ranging from long gowns to short minis, spaghetti-strap silhouettes and mock-neck designs. Prints included yellow taxis and embroidered patches representing New York’s five boroughs.

One standout piece reimagined Miller’s “baseball” mini, originally worn by supermodel Christy Turlington on the designer’s Spring 1992 runway, as a sequin gown.

Another design revisited Miller’s vintage necktie creations from the late 1980s. A dress featuring prints of junk food, wine and spirits was constructed entirely from vintage men’s ties, reflecting the designer’s interest in unconventional materials and playful motifs.

Miller said customers had recently been asking her to revive her signature ties and distinctive prints, suggesting that the time was right for a return to more expressive fashion.

Rejecting Minimalism

As fashion shifts away from understated luxury, Miller appears comfortable embracing bold colours, humorous details and statement-making designs.

Asked about minimalism, she made her position clear: “I don’t like beige. I’ll never wear beige.”

That preference for colour and individuality also connects her with designer Sander Lak, who praised Miller for her longevity in the industry and her continued commitment to her customers.

Miller, in turn, has supported Lak’s work. She previously bought pieces from his former label, Sies Marjan, and continues to shop from his new eponymous brand.

Lak described her continued support as a meaningful compliment from a fellow designer.

Through the anniversary presentation, Miller reaffirmed the design philosophy that has shaped her career: fashion should be expressive, individual and, above all, fun. Her Spring 2027 collection brought that spirit back to the forefront while celebrating more than four decades of business in New York.
