Bangladesh sets $91.06 as minimum monthly wage: Workers and employees in Bangladesh’s cotton textile business are set to benefit from a recent and noteworthy announcement about the minimum wage. After being fixed at Tk 5,710 ($51.99) in 2018, the minimum wage has been significantly increased to Tk 10,001 ($91.06) each month. This change is a result of the government’s endeavors to meet the changing demands and improve the lives of people working in this important industry.

On March 1st, this year, a new wage structure was put into place to provide a more thorough foundation for fair compensation. It included ten worker grades. Basic salary, housing allowance, medical allowance, travel allowance, and food allowance are all part of the updated figure, as stated in the labor ministry’s gazette notice.

As an example, tenants in district towns will receive 60% of their basic wage for housing, while those in divisional cities will receive 70%. This applies to workers in Grade 10. The overall gross amount has remained unchanged, indicating a balanced approach to wage determination, even though the labor ministry made minor adjustments to the house rent rates and boosted the basic pay from the wage board’s initial suggestion.

The government has set varying monthly minimum wages for workers across different categories under the new legislation. Grade 10 workers will pay Tk 10,001, while Grade 1 workers will earn Tk 14,307. In addition, there are now six tiers of government employees in this field, with all tiers sharing a minimum wage of Tk 10,001. Salary ranges for workers in Grades 5–1 are structured to reflect factors like job duties and years of experience.

The government’s dedication to supporting fair labor practices and protecting cotton textile workers is evident in this decision. Bangladesh hopes to improve workers’ living conditions and encourage long-term growth in the textile industry by introducing a new salary system that takes inflation and other economic factors into consideration.
