Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana to Anchor New Luxury Wing at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront

Cape Town is cementing its status as Africa’s premier luxury destination. The V&A Waterfront, one of the continent’s most iconic shopping and tourism hotspots, is undergoing a major upscale transformation—anchored by Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana.

V&A’s Luxury Expansion Takes Shape

In a strategic move to meet growing demand for high-end fashion, the V&A Waterfront is tripling its luxury retail footprint to nearly 4,000 square meters (over 43,000 sq ft) in a dedicated new luxury wing. According to CEO David Green, the expansion will double store space for the three global powerhouses and consolidate their presence under one roof.

While all three brands currently operate within the V&A, their boutiques are scattered across the center. The new development promises a more immersive and cohesive luxury experience for shoppers.

A Hub for Global Luxury Brands

The R207 million (approx. $11.4 million) project is expected to attract up to six new luxury brands, including Versace from Capri Holdings. Existing names like Burberry and MaXhosa Africa will also feature prominently in the expanded retail mix.

This bold investment reflects the V&A’s ambition to narrow the gap with Johannesburg’s elite Diamond Walk in Sandton City, and solidify Cape Town’s growing reputation as a hub for affluent shoppers.

Why South Africa, Why Now?

Driven by a rising middle class, increasing consumer spending power, and a growing population of millionaires, Africa is emerging as a strong luxury market. According to the IMF, sub-Saharan Africa is on track to become the third-fastest growing emerging market in 2025—trailing only India and China.

In South Africa, trading density for luxury brands soared 171% between 2019 and June 2024, according to Clur’s Shopping Centre Index. The Western Cape, bolstered by international tourism and internal migration of wealthy families, is quickly becoming the nation’s economic and cultural heart.

Henley Partners projects that Cape Town will overtake Johannesburg as Africa’s richest city by 2030.

What’s Next?

Construction is already underway, with the luxury wing set to open in phases from November 2025 through Easter 2026. The V&A Waterfront recorded R1.4 billion in retail sales in December 2024 alone, a nearly 17% increase from the previous year. Of the R10 billion in total 2024 sales, luxury items accounted for around 7%.

Beyond the retail expansion, the V&A is also planning a R20 billion development of the adjacent Granger Bay precinct, pending approval from the City of Cape Town in early 2025. This development includes a land reclamation initiative to expand the area’s premium offering.

Cape Town’s Global Luxury Moment

Set against the backdrop of Table Mountain and South Africa’s oldest working harbor, the V&A’s luxury retail expansion positions Cape Town as a rising global player in luxury tourism and fashion. With international giants investing in the region and local demand growing, the city is primed to become a leading luxury capital of the Global South.
