John Galliano is bringing his signature approach to theatrical fashion and garment transformation to Zara, with his first Re{form} collection launching October 1 at 1 a.m. PT/4 a.m. ET, or 10 a.m. CEST. Prices start at $29.90, putting the designer’s couture-inspired vision within reach of Zara shoppers.
The launch begins a two-year partnership built around an unusual creative concept. Rather than simply designing a new range for the retailer, Galliano has revisited Zara’s previous-season garments, taking them apart, altering their proportions and reconstructing them through his own design language.
From Everyday Zara to Galliano
Under Galliano’s direction, familiar Zara staples become dramatically different pieces. A lace-trimmed slip dress is reworked so the fabric rises toward the neckline, creating an oversized jabot. An enlarged cotton shirt becomes a jacket featuring a trompe l’oeil leather effect, while a wool-blend coat receives repositioned pockets, enlarged lapels and an extended tail-like hem.
The collection draws heavily on techniques associated with Galliano, including bias cutting, transparent tulle layers, precise tailoring and references to historical dress. Cropped tailcoats, fitted dresses and elongated bicorne hats feature prominently, while several looks draw inspiration from Les Incroyables, the flamboyant dandies of post-revolutionary France who also influenced Galliano’s 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection.
The designer’s recent work at Maison Margiela provides another point of reference. His Spring 2024 Artisanal collection for the house became one of the year’s most discussed fashion shows, combining extreme corsetry, sheer fabrics and radically manipulated silhouettes beneath Paris’ Pont Alexandre III.
Re{form} operates on a much larger commercial scale, but the central idea remains familiar: transforming recognizable clothing into something unexpected. Instead of starting with couture fabrics and bespoke garments, Galliano is working with pieces that originated on Zara’s mass-market racks.
The collaboration also arrives at an important point in Galliano’s career. In August, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Galliano announced that the planned John Galliano: Horizons Costume Institute exhibition for spring 2027 would no longer proceed. His next major project is instead reaching consumers through one of the world’s largest fashion retailers.
The Re{form} partnership is scheduled to continue across seasonal releases for two years, with Zara describing the project as an exploration of deconstruction and reconstruction using garments from its own archive.
The price difference from Galliano’s couture work is substantial. While one Galliano-designed Dior couture piece sold for €663,000 earlier this year, the Zara collaboration begins at just $29.90.
How to Shop Re{form}
The first collection launches October 1 through Zara’s website and selected stores. Given the anticipation surrounding Galliano’s first Zara release, shoppers interested in particular pieces may face limited availability as demand builds.
