The appearance gave the still-young Jimmy Choo label a highly visible royal moment just one year after the company was founded. By then, Diana’s relationship with Choo went back years. The footwear designer had begun visiting Diana at Kensington Palace in the early 1990s to create custom shoes meant to match her specific outfits. With each outing, the curiosity about the brand increased.
“She came to us via her couture designers and asked Jimmy to make shoes. She had an inner radiance and was utterly normal. She would drive straight up to the door of our first store on Motcomb Street and park on the double yellow lines,” recalled Sandra Choi, creative director of Jimmy Choo, in a 2016 FN interview.
Diana’s affinity for the brand continued until her death on Aug. 31, 1997, less than three months after the “Swan Lake” gala. Her shoe wardrobe also included designs from Manolo Blahnik, Chanel, Salvatore Ferragamo and Rayne.
