The Gucci Horsebit Loafer was created by Aldo Gucci in 1953 and is now 70 years old. To celebrate this important milestone, the house of Gucci held a special event at the art space Spazio Maiocchi on the first day of Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week. The event was a multidisciplinary, immersive experience, with installations, live performances, exhibitions, and movies, all chosen by Spazio Maiocchi’s creative director, Alessio Ascari.

The space was transformed into the Gucci Horsebeat Society, a countercultural meta-country club. Ten young artists reinterpreted the symbolism of the Horsebit, which is a metal clamp on a horse’s bridle and one of Gucci’s most well-known symbols. The Horsebit was morphed and twisted into an AI-generated pattern on the thick wall-to-wall moquette carpeting, warped into distorted kinetics woven into the texture of a denim outfit, or sneaking in as a nearly undetectable graphic in the classic checks of a Prince of Wales wool tailored suit.

Looks from Gucci’s spring collection were displayed on mannequins in a room that was completely wallpapered by Australian image-maker Ed Davis. His collage patterns were also used on an oversized bowling set/skater silk ensemble. The pieces in the line referenced the archives and were streamlined and turned into bigger shapes. Both tailored and sport-inspired pieces had bigger sizes but kept their classic construction.

The event featured artworks all over the site. Swiss artist Sylvie Fleury’s 1998 furry bedroom was topped by a hanging square-heeled Horsebit loafer in red patent leather from Tom Ford’s Gucci fall 1995 show. An impressive surrealist wooden desk in the shape of a bean was made by the American artist Pitter Patter. It was held up by copies of stylish knee-length legs wearing different styles of Gucci bootcut trousers and Horsebit loafers. The event was entertaining and funny, and got people excited for September, when the new creative director, Sabato De Sarno, will start.
