Shein profits surge as it builds up: The most recent numbers for Shein’s 2023 financial performance have come to light, and they show a major achievement for the fast-fashion behemoth. Profits for Shein more than quadrupled in 2023, according to a story in The Financial Times that cited a financing agreement and sources close to the company.

Shein may have its headquarters in Singapore, but the company’s roots are in China, where it was established. Despite having only about 200 employees in Singapore, the company’s activities in China—which had over 10,000 just over a year ago—remain crucial to its business.

The online retailer Shein made about $2 billion in 2023 on sales of almost $45 billion worth of goods. Their net income in 2022 was $700 million and in 2021 it was $1.1 billion, thus this incredible surge in profitability is a significant improvement.

To put these numbers in context, consider that Shein’s profits are higher than those of other well regarded fashion retailers in the world. In their most recent fiscal years, omnichannel activities brought in $820 million for H&M and $5.8 billion for Inditex.

A person close to the matter told The Financial Times that the China Securities Regulatory Commission and the Cyberspace Administration of China are anticipated to authorize the share sale “in the coming weeks,” putting Shein’s share listing in the hands of regulators.

New York is the favored choice of Shein when it comes to the location of their initial public offering (IPO), but the decision is still waiting. Given the difficulties encountered by Chinese companies listing in the US, London is also being evaluated as a backup option.

Impressive financial performance highlights Shein’s position as a competitive participant in the global fashion business, even while the company navigates legal processes and makes strategic decisions about its IPO.
