OutDoor by ISPO 2025 Canceled: A Strategic Move Toward a Stronger Future

The outdoor and sports industry is witnessing a significant shift with the recent announcement that OutDoor by ISPO 2025 has been canceled. Originally scheduled for May 19-21, 2025, at Messe München in Munich, Germany, this event was expected to gather key industry leaders, brands, and professionals. However, due to lower-than-expected exhibitor and visitor numbers, the European Outdoor Group (EOG), in collaboration with Messe München, made the tough decision to call off the event.

Christian Schneidermeier, the newly appointed Director of the EOG, played a pivotal role in this decision. He described it as a “courageous move,” emphasizing the importance of reassessing industry trends to ensure stronger future events. With registration numbers failing to meet expectations, the EOG chose to step back and rethink its approach rather than proceed with an event that might not deliver the expected value. Schneidermeier explained that 2025 will be a year of reflection and strategy, ensuring that future events genuinely benefit the industry.

Messe München, a key organizing partner, echoed this sentiment. Harald Kirchschlager, Executive Director for Strategy and Development, acknowledged that the initial goal of increasing participation by 20 percent was not met. However, rather than seeing this as a setback, he views it as an opportunity to enhance ISPO Munich. The exhibition team, led by Lena Haushofer, will now focus on strengthening ISPO Munich, ensuring it remains a premier platform for the outdoor and sports industry.

In addition to canceling OutDoor by ISPO 2025, the EOG has put the European Outdoor Summit on hold. The goal is to develop a refreshed industry framework that aligns better with today’s market needs. A new Board of Directors, President, and Council Members will be appointed to guide future initiatives. Throughout 2025, the EOG will collaborate with Messe München to rethink and refine the concept of OutDoor by ISPO with plans to relaunch it in 2026 with innovative formats, expanded networking opportunities, and meaningful discussions that drive industry progress.

While the cancellation might be disappointing for some, it demonstrates a commitment to quality and relevance. By dedicating time to reassessment and innovation, industry leaders are laying the groundwork for a stronger and more impactful event in 2026. The outdoor and sports community thrives on adaptability, and this decision reflects that mindset—prioritizing long-term success over immediate participation numbers.
