Giorgio Armani presented his first collection in 1975, a year before the 21st Summer Olympics in Montreal. To commemorate the upcoming 33rd Olympic Games in Paris next year, Armani showcased a selection from his Emporio line. At the end of the show, 12 Italian Olympic athletes, half of whom were Paralympians, walked the Teatro Armani runway wearing a new version of the national kit. The room was filled with cheers and support.

The collection was mostly composed of gray tones and deep, inky black, with the only bright spots of color being the red, white, and green flags waved by the athletes. The theme of the collection was a ginkgo leaf, and many of the pieces were based on the way traditional Asian clothing fits together. The leaf was featured as cutouts on one-and-a-half-breasted peak lapel suits with wide, flowing pants or on latticed tops that resembled trellises. It was also seen in matte jacquard on interesting shirt/biker combos and shone on soft-shouldered, loose gold tunic shirts.

The show continued with a section of beige knit hoodies worn over draped drawstring pants in the same color, followed by a technical section with sheer greige pieces made of silky but strong materials that were worn over lug-toe sneakers. Hats worn high on the back were held on by harnesses. The ginkgo leaf returned on hoodies to signify Emporio’s return, and the last run of evening looks were often built around the horseshoe waistcoat. The fluid black and white shapes changed and flowed between Asian and European source codes, embodying the Olympic spirit of “faster, higher, stronger—together”.
