GU to expand overseas with store opening in New York
The well-known Japanese clothing retailer GU is getting ready to make a splash on the international scene by launching an online platform and opening a flagship store in New York City this fall. As GU expands beyond Asia for the first time, it aims to captivate fashion-forward audiences in the heart of SoHo, marking a key milestone for the brand.
The GU NY SoHo flagship store, nestled in the vibrant SoHo neighborhood, will boast a generous sales floor area of approximately 10,225 square feet across two levels. It will showcase a meticulously curated collection of trendy footwear, chic bags, and stylish accessories, along with a diverse range of men’s and women’s fashion that embodies GU’s unique blend of quality, affordability, and contemporary style.
Extending GU’s reach nationally, the highly anticipated online store will provide the same sought designs as the brick-and-mortar counterpart. Fashion aficionados across the US will be able to shop for the brand’s treasured pieces with simplicity and convenience.
Following the resounding success of GU’s New York pop-up store, which will bid farewell this summer, the decision to establish a flagship store was a natural progression. Reflecting on this triumph, GU CEO Osamu Yunoki expressed his optimism for the brand’s future in the American market, citing the enthusiastic reception from consumers throughout the pop-up’s tenure as a promising sign of things to come.
“For about a year and a half since opening our first pop-up store in the U.S. in the fall of 2022, we have been privileged to serve many customers, and their feedback has been invaluable to us. We have great expectations for our business development in the U.S.,” Yunoki said. He further reiterated GU’s commitment to using this feedback to enhance its products and worldwide operations, demonstrating the brand’s responsiveness to its customers’ needs.
As part of its strategic move towards global expansion, GU will establish a product division in New York in September 2023. This significant step underscores GU’s commitment to fostering product development on a global scale. In preparation for its ambitious expansion, GU will intensify its local recruitment efforts, with a focus on key positions such as designers and pattern makers, ensuring the brand’s commitment to innovation and quality.
Ever since its launch in 2006 as Uniqlo’s sister brand, GU has become a famous name in Asia, thanks to the enormous praise it has received. With an extensive network of around 470 outlets, mostly in Japan, GU is all set to make a big splash in the world of fashion when it debuts in New York City, bringing with it a fresh wave of creativity and flair.
