FASHION SHOW FOR ANNA SUI FALL WINTER 2023 NYFW

Anna Sui’s autumn collection was created in homage to the once-popular nightclub environment in New York “The Peppermint lounge” where the Twist dance craze flourished, and features a stunning array of modern dresses with plenty of cheerful, pop sensibility and ’60s influence for dancing the night away.

Three models opened the show by dancing the Twist on the stage of the venue while wearing adorable, thematic peppermint pink and green-hued faux leather metallic minis (two in slip styles with lingerie black lace trim, stockings, and pointy Mary Janes; the third in a trench, matching dress, sequin knit tights, and matching John Fluevog cowboy boots). Sui created her own scene, including Holzer, Marc Jacobs, Karen Elson, Sofia Coppola, her niece Chase Sui Wonders, and Pete Davidson.

“There are a lot of lingerie details,” Sui said of the design, evident in the floral-printed satin and chiffon slips, blouses, and bed jackets. “I’ve always adored Elizabeth Taylor and ‘Butterfield Eight’ when she wore the slip and the mink coat.” According to the show notes, Sui once played the role of Taylor in a black lace slip and faux leopard coat, which appeared over the “small outfits to dance in” with rainbow (and leopard) faux fur jackets.

Sui continued to amplify the upbeat nostalgia (with a soundtrack to match) through a rich, vibrant mix of classic, cultural, and modern textures and motifs (think lurex tweeds, mohair plaids, and windowpane checks, houndstooth and geo jacquards with pop florals, camouflage, studded denim, and shimmering stretch glitter knits) layered head to toe. Sui tattooed mesh top with velour argyle pink miniskirt and vest; lurex tweed set with tinsel trim; camouflage parka and kilt with velour argyle shirt (topped with an archival crochet hat from spring 1994); lurex tweed jackets with slip dressing.

Anna Sui’s concert was an upbeat, foot-tapping good time, and her clothes added to the positive vibe.
