Fall 2019 Couture: Fendi
The House of Fendi is moving forward after the demise of its long term creative director Karl Lagerfeld. In what seemed like a fitting homage to the creative director of 54 years to Fendi, the Fall 2019 Couture Collection was showcased in the Temple of Venus in Rome, a place Lagerfeld loved and the brand has underwritten to restore.
Silvia Venturini Fendi, the now solo designer presented the collection in the backdrop of the majesty Roman Colosseum. The extravagant show was breathtaking, to say the least. The collection put up 54 pieces, the number of years Karl Lagerfeld had spent in the house of Fendi. Each piece took inspiration from Lagerfeld’s tenure with the fashion house. Venturini Fendi spoke about how she had to hit the archives to get reference and inspiration for this collection. What turned out was a fuse of collections with a homage to Lagerfeld while the brand staying firmly rooted to ground with one foot and taking another foot into the unseen future.
The late creative director not only changed the face of fashion and also what could come out of the House of Fendi but he also revolutionized the use of Fur in fashion. Keeping this in mind and also putting her own foot in the collection, Venturini Fendi used fur in a ‘lighter and lighter” mode in the collection. The opening piece was a white wool suit with a white full sleeve jacket and white bootleg pants. The look inspired by Lagerfeld’s time in the ’70s set the tone for the evening. What followed was a collection giving options both for day wear and evening wear in geometric patterns and crossover earthy palettes. Venturini Fendi also dedicated the show to his team:
“We are all the same people, from the set, the music, we are the same team. I think that this is a way of showing that we are a good team, a tight team and that we have learned so much from him.”
