A Cheerful Collection by Anna Sui at the NYFW
At the New York Fashion Week Show, Anna Sui presented a collection that was Poptimism and took the audience back to the pop culture of the ’60s and ’70s. Growing up in Detroit served as the background for this collection. Growing up in the Detroit area, she was too young to get into the Grande Ballroom, so she befriended a senior to collect show bills designed by Carl Lundgren and Gary Grimshaw for her. The background of the runaway had six posters depicting art from the ’60s pop culture.
The collection drew heavily from the works of Gary Grimsham, Victor Moscoso, Milton Glaser, Carl Lundgren, David Palladini, Mary Blair and David Weidman. Colors were an important part of Sui’s collection. Every model was vibrant and popped up from head to toe. Bright colored wigs adored almost all model’s head. They were inspired by Anna Karina’s wedding day bouffant. The pieces from the collection were as eccentric as they were refreshing. Short dresses, faux fur coats, knitted cardigans, granny dresses, brocade suits, jackets, frocks and jumpsuits dominated the collection.
