Brandon Maxwell dedicates his Elegant Fall’19 Collection to his Mother
“If she doesn’t need it, she doesn’t have it”
Guests at Brandon Maxwell’s Showcasing were in for a surprise. Gone was the extravaganza of last season. This season was all about returning to the fundamentals. Maxwell had been spending the past few months with his mother, Pam who was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after the Spring’19 Runaway.
“In that time I developed a deeper appreciation for women who transform the ugliness and brutality of reality into something beautiful and substantial. I found myself thinking about the potential of clothes to act like armor against the elements both physical and spiritual,” Maxwell explained in his show notes.
The Fall’19 Collection was quite demure with a palette of black and white with the occasional neon green, apple red and aqua popping up. Maxwell used silk and velvet to display his pieces. The collection displayed essential pieces like tailored trousers, pant suits, Little Black Dresses upgraded to Luxe Elegance. The collection included several takes on tuxedo’s with a black tuxedo displaying a cut-out sports bra and another piece in white displaying a puffer jacket instead of a blazer. His final piece of the evening was a parachute gown in vivid pink.
The collection, which was all about women showed diversity on the runway as the show was opened by and then walked by seven women of color back-to-back. When he decided to take a walk down the runway, it was arm in arm with his mother. Every person in the audience was left touched by his emotional gesture.
