Brandon Maxwell fall/winter collection 2023
The six-day New York Fashion Week is winding down, and trends are becoming clearer. While some designers are still striving for virality, another group has given up on it. The most famous and memorable Instagrammable moment created by Brandon Maxwell was Lady
Gaga’s multiple red carpet wardrobe changes at the 2019 Met Gala. However, he is a member of a sizable NYC contingent that emphasises wearability and wardrobe building. Their emphasis is on sophisticated tailoring in muted colours with few embellishments. They might be referred to as the new minimalists in America.
For this collection, Maxwell said he started from scratch and chose a bell sleeve peplum top that he thought was ready for a comeback. With nearly a dozen years of experience under his belt, he utilised an alpaca wool stretch knit that follows the curves of the body this time around instead of the “cumbersome” crepe he used in that first collection. Backstage, he explained, “It was about taking stock of who I am and asking, ‘What can I do better?'” Both a strapless top and an off-the-shoulder dress featured the same shape.
On the tailoring front, he defied convention by wearing traditional jackets with shorts with deep cuffs and elasticized waists. Black and white variations of the playful look were worn by Cara Taylor to open and close the show. From a shirt, maxi skirt, and bandeau top to a plunge-front dress secured together under the bust with chrome hardware, leather was present in every piece of clothing. Maxwell identified his favourite item as a simple black wool shirt dress.
Although there were a few jewel-encrusted pieces, the collection’s mature restraint—for day or night—was the main takeaway. I’m not sure if the evening is a gown for me right now, he said. ” I had a hard time with anything that felt too ‘dressed.’” One dress with a sylph-like appearance paired a knit tank and a wider silk skirt, while another joined a sweater with softly padded shoulders and a bias cut skirt. In the most recent season, Maxwell experimented with colour and various prints. He said goodbye to all that for fall. Almost everything arrived in monochrome, and 100% of it was in neutrals. He seemed to anticipate queries regarding the palette. Has Brandon Maxwell turned grey? It actually originated from a place of joy, he claimed.
