The Grand Palais in Paris had a double-tier circular library with the main floor set with cozy sitting areas installed for the Fall’19 Couture Show of Chanel. This marked Virginie Viard first collection post the Karl Lagerfeld era. Viard with her debut collection paid tribute to the creative designers – Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld, who have made Chanel what it is today. Both Chanel and Lagerfeld were avid readers and the library set up was a tribute to them and their love of reading. Viard herself is an avid book lover.

The designer also tried to bring the bookish love in her collection as she described a Chanel Couture woman favoring “slippers, loafers or pumps with a bow tie that reinvent the two-tone geometry of the house. Little glasses on chains give her the look of a young woman eager for culture, poetry, novels” this fall season. The Fall’19 Couture was all about long and lean silhouettes. The daywear offered skirt suits, tweed overcoats and pleated trousers. It felt like something one can easily wear during the day and not leave them in the wardrobe for “Couture-like occasions.”  There are also plenty of options for the evening wear though they were simple, clean and minimalist. Some belted dresses, silk robe coat and formal pajama sets gave a vibe of leisure and relaxation.

Virginie Viard is no newbie to the world of designing. She had been working with Lagerfeld for many years. Now, she is boldly taking steps to put her mark to the brand and is doing wonderfully well. Her collection was refreshing and artistic. But it is not easy to step into the shoes of a designer who changed the face of fashion. But one can expect interesting things from the House of Chanel in the future.
