The narrative follows Manitas, a cartel lord, who enlists Zoe Saldaña to portray Rita, a lawyer in Mexico City aiding his escape from the country and undergoing gender confirmation surgery. The plot thickens when Manitas, now played by Karla Sofía Gascón as Emilia Perez, assumes the identity of his own sister and returns years later to his children, living with his ex-wife, portrayed by Selena Gomez.
