SINGAPORE — Security concerns at high-profile celebrity events came into sharp focus after a man breached barricades and rushed at American pop star and actress Ariana Grande during the Wicked: For Good movie premiere at Universal Studios Singapore (USS) on Nov 13, 2025. The incident, captured in videos circulating online, showed the intruder briefly putting his arm around Grande before being tackled and removed by security personnel.

The man, 26-year-old Australian Johnson Wen, who has a history of crashing events under the online handle “Pyjama Man,” was charged in court on Nov 14 for public nuisance.

This episode has renewed discussions on how red-carpet events balance fan engagement with celebrity protection, as well as the layers of planning required to maintain safety.

At events involving celebrities, safeguarding the guest of honor is paramount, while ensuring orderly crowd management is equally critical. Gabriel Rumdej, director of ASEC Security, explained that fan excitement can escalate quickly when stars appear, potentially causing pushing, stampedes, or other hazards.

Security teams must anticipate risks such as objects being thrown, sudden movements from fans, and other threats. Quick evacuation routes and contingency plans are essential to protect both the celebrity and the audience.

To maintain safety, events typically employ multiple layers of security. Vigneswaran M., director at SecuriState, said there is usually one team dedicated to shielding the celebrity and another focused on crowd management. In some cases, a third layer of undercover or plainclothes officers is embedded within the audience to monitor for suspicious activity.

Managing fan engagement without compromising safety requires a nuanced approach. Security teams conduct risk assessments well in advance, coordinating with event organizers to identify potential persons of interest in the crowd.

However, comprehensive screening of every attendee is often impractical due to resource constraints. Vigneswaran noted that deterrence strategies, such as multiple barriers and visible security presence, are generally more effective than attempting to screen all guests individually.

Aby Al-Sofli, Southeast Asia representative for UCP Group, emphasized that celebrities may not want security to closely shadow them during photo opportunities or press interactions. Proper planning, including knowledge of floor layouts and anticipated crowd movements, is critical to maintaining a balance between visibility and protection..

Large-scale red-carpet events require months of preparation. Security teams analyze the profile of the celebrity to anticipate the type of crowd expected and potential risk factors. Rumdej described the process as preparing for contingencies with “paranoia,” ensuring that personnel are ready for unexpected incidents.

Planning involves assessing the venue, allocating manpower, and meeting organizer expectations. Security officers in Singapore must hold a Security Officer Licence issued by the Singapore Police Force, and those managing crowds also require certification in Crowd and Traffic Control.

While experts were not involved in the USS premiere and cannot comment on its specific security setup, they agreed the breach indicates areas for improvement. Al-Sofli suggested the incident could reflect insufficient quality manpower, while Rumdej noted that response from officers near Grande may have been slower than ideal.

Vigneswaran highlighted that Singaporean crowds are generally orderly, and sudden crowd breaches are rare. As such, local security personnel may not always be prepared for unpredictable fan behavior typical at Western celebrity events.

Experts recommend several measures to prevent similar breaches. These include installing multiple layers of physical barriers, increasing manpower, and conducting realistic role-playing exercises to prepare staff for unexpected celebrity movements.

Rumdej stressed the importance of continuous vigilance, noting that templates and standard operating procedures must be adapted to the unique variables of each event. Security teams must anticipate that celebrities may deviate from planned routes or interactions, requiring flexible and reactive responses.

The Ariana Grande incident at Universal Studios Singapore underscores the complex challenges of celebrity event security. From crowd management and risk assessment to real-time response, safeguarding stars during public appearances requires meticulous planning, trained personnel, and constant vigilance. While fans expect close encounters and photo opportunities, expert security planning ensures that excitement does not compromise safety.
