Kim Shui presented a refreshed creative vision for Spring 2027, combining her signature sensual designs with theatrical influences drawn from Beijing opera. The collection marks a new chapter for the designer, who celebrated the 10th anniversary of her brand in February, amid renewed creative energy, a new showroom and a new public relations team.
The brand has also enjoyed a notable summer, with Dua Lipa wearing one of Shui’s signature butterfly chiffon qipao dresses, originally introduced for Spring 2020. The moment brought renewed attention to the designer’s distinctive blend of Chinese-inspired design and provocative eveningwear.
Beijing Opera Inspires a Theatrical Runway
Known for staging memorable presentations, Shui has previously taken audiences onto a boat and to a rooftop 94 stories above New York City. For Spring 2027, she staged her first outdoor runway show on the streets near her showroom, using the city itself as a backdrop for the collection’s performance-driven concept.
The designer drew inspiration from the layered performances of Beijing opera, a reference connected to her grandfather. The traditional art form informed both the collection and the decision to present it in a public setting, where the runway became a stage for the models and their looks.
The show opened with Shui’s familiar Chinese-inspired designs, presented in coordinated sets. However, the collection also highlighted a more developed approach to menswear, a category she introduced in a limited capacity for Spring 2025.
Shui explained that Beijing opera often features men performing female roles, making menswear a natural extension of the collection’s central inspiration. This season, the category appeared more assured and polished, suggesting that the designer has grown more confident in expanding beyond her established womenswear offerings.
One standout look paired a brown patterned camp shirt with loose satin trousers. A coordinating womenswear ensemble featured a scarf-style top in the same print, finished with fringe along the hem. The pieces offered a more luxurious, versatile interpretation of Shui’s aesthetic, which has largely been associated with statement-making outfits and sensual eveningwear.
Butterfly Prints and Bold Eveningwear
Despite the collection’s broader direction, Shui retained the dramatic silhouettes and colorful prints that have become central to her identity. Her latest designs included a plunging chiffon dress that recalled the high-impact glamour associated with Versace, alongside a purple butterfly-print look with a deep V-neckline and a sparkling emblem near the hem.
The design also evoked the iconic green Versace dress worn by Jennifer Lopez, a pop-culture fashion moment that continues to influence contemporary style conversations. Shui’s interpretation brought the reference into her own visual language, drawing on butterfly motifs and revealing cuts while maintaining the playful, theatrical character of her work.
For Spring 2027, Shui balanced her signature provocative glamour with a more considered approach to menswear and coordinated separates. The result was a collection that acknowledged the designer’s established strengths while demonstrating a willingness to explore new categories and refine her creative direction.
With its blend of Chinese cultural references, stage-inspired drama and elevated everyday pieces, the collection presented a more expansive vision for Kim Shui—one that preserves the label’s distinctive sensuality while opening the door to a broader wardrobe.
