Major changes are unfolding at cult French skin care brand Biologique Recherche.
Jean-Guillaume Trottier, who has served as the company’s chief executive officer since January 2024, has recently left the business, according to industry sources.
A spokeswoman for Biologique Recherche declined to comment Thursday.
Rupert Schmid and Pierre-Louis Delapalme are believed to have returned to operational roles at the company, taking on interim co-CEO positions. Both executives also serve as vice chairmen of Biologique Recherche’s supervisory board.
The company, which operates a flagship institute on Paris’ Avenue des Champs-Élysées, is also believed to have begun a sales process.
A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the potential transaction.
The leadership changes come as investor interest in clinical skin care continues to grow, alongside the expanding aesthetic-procedures market and a heightened consumer focus on wellness following the pandemic.
Biologique Recherche last secured a major investment in 2019. In October of that year, three European family offices — the Van Rappard family, Christopher Descours and the Frère family — joined forces with Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Nestlé’s former chief executive officer, as long-term strategic partners. Philippe Allouche, son of the company’s founder, was expected to remain in charge of creation.
The year before the investment, Biologique Recherche generated roughly 40 million euros in sales, according to industry sources. Today, the company is believed to generate approximately 150 million euros in annual sales.
Trottier’s mandate was to guide the more than 40-year-old brand into its next phase while returning to the principles that helped make its market debut distinctive: personalization, biotechnology, innovation and a different approach to retail.
Founded in the 1970s by biologist Yvan Allouche and physiotherapist Josette Allouche, Biologique Recherche began as a research-and-development operation focused on creating treatments and products for professional use. The business has since expanded internationally and is now sold in 74 countries.
Last month, the brand opened its first New York City flagship, its fourth location in the U.S. and 11th worldwide. Over the past year, Biologique Recherche has also expanded its U.S. retail presence by adding 40 new doors, including launches at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and other retailers.
