Norma Kamali returned to New York Fashion Week for Spring 2026 with a nostalgic yet forward-looking collection that reintroduced one of her most iconic ideas—the “Sweats” collection from 1980. Known for revolutionizing casual sportswear and blending comfort with style long before “athleisure” became a trend, Kamali decided to revisit and modernize her groundbreaking designs that once earned her a Coty Award for design innovation.

This time around, she “knocked off” her own original work, breathing new life into familiar pieces like the running panties, puff shorts, and drop pants. Instead of traditional sweatshirt fabrics, she updated them with soft terry, and replaced the bold shoulder pads of the ’80s with subtle molded structures that shape sweatshirts, dresses, and jackets more naturally. She also added new pieces such as sleek bodysuits and flat-front men’s pants, creating a modern and versatile wardrobe.

“It’s all very clean,” Kamali said. “That’s what made the original collection so good. It came right after the wild Studio 54 years when I was doing crazy things. Now it’s simple, it’s mixable, and it just feels right again.”

The reimagined sweats were woven throughout her larger Spring 2026 lineup—a collection that celebrated ease, fluidity, and timeless appeal. There were airy shawls, reworked versions of her signature Pickleball and Diana dresses with new oversized bows, and crisp habotai shirt dresses that blended practicality with charm. Playful “twist” dresses, tops, and skirts in baby pink stood out, along with new additions to her Wardrobe collection, offering refined tailoring that fits effortlessly into everyday life.

Kamali also introduced her biggest launch of the season: the Lifestyle collection. This accessible line of essential base layers—think T-shirts, tank tops, and pedal pushers—will be priced under $200 and refreshed each season with new colors. It’s a nod to her original sporty spirit and proof that Kamali still knows exactly what her customers want: smart, functional, beautiful clothes that move with real life.

With this collection, Norma Kamali once again bridged her legendary past with the present, reminding the industry why she remains a true pioneer of modern, wearable design.
